Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR)

virtual in NY/NJ & In-person in nJ

When talking isn’t enough.

EMDR is a powerful form of therapy which proposes that, while we all are oriented toward adaptive ways of coping and positive relationships with ourselves and the world around us, sometimes traumatic experiences interfere with this, and reshape our narrative and experience of safety (or lack thereof) in the world.  EMDR aims to identify historical origins of "stuckness"  and  uses bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, or tones) to process those memories.  In doing so, we can reduce distress and increase our adaptive responses to challenging situations.

Some issues EMDR can address:

  • Developmental trauma (including complex trauma or early relational trauma)

  • Recent traumatic events (to prevent PTSD from developing)

  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Relationship or job stressors

  • Dissociation (in conjunction with other trauma-focused techniques)

Can i do EMdr in addition to my regular “talk” therapy?

Yes!

EMDR is a great modality in that it can be done as standalone treatment, as part of an ongoing treatment, or as an adjunctive treatment. So if you are seeing a therapist you are feeling helped by, adjunctive EMDR can be conducted alongside and as a compliment to that therapy.

FAQS

Common questions about EMDR

  • For a great description, including a video, visit https://www.emdria.org/about-emdr-therapy/experiencing-emdr-therapy/

  • This depends on several factors, including the nature of the issue, the duration of the trauma, and how much foundational skills are needed to begin. Generally, EMDR is quite “efficient,” and relief can be felt quickly. I will be able to give you a better sense after our consultation.

  • Yes I do. There is some research that shows that more intensive work (e.g., longer sessions, over a few hours or even a few days) can lead to results in a much shorter time frame than weekly sessions. I’m happy to offer this as an option if it would be a good fit for you; please feel free to get in touch.
