No one is exactly the same—your therapy shouldn’t be, either.

DR. Sasha Berger

Hi, I’m Dr. Sasha Berger

I’m a licensed clinical psychologist (NY and NJ) with over 15 years of experience. I am a suburban explant from my beloved Brooklyn; after living there for about 10 years I made the move to my home state of NJ, where I live with my husband and dog. My dog, Gryffin, does therapy with me sometimes (he’s quite the well-behaved empath) and may be found sometimes on zoom or in-person during sessions. My office is in Red Bank, NJ, which is easily accessible by train from NYC. I offer individual psychotherapy, EMDR, and consultation to other professionals in the areas of trauma and burnout.

I have arrived at my particular approach to therapy from a combination of my training, clinical experience and—importantly, I think— own experience on the other side. I have had wonderful, and varied experiences as a patient, and have experienced firsthand the importance of both “top down” (e.g., traditional talk therapy) and “bottom up” (more experiential therapies, such as EMDR or somatic work) approaches in achieving healing and creating change.

I bring all of this experience, along with my training and education, to my work with you: whether it’s more traditional talk therapy, ongoing trauma-focused work, a consultation on burnout, or an EMDR intensive. I approach my all of my work from a highly thoughtful, holistic and integrative place.

My Approach

I place a high value on context—how did we get here?

A curious approach and gentle excavation of past experiences and relationships can help us uncover this.

Over my years practicing, however, I have found that achieving insight is often not enough on its own to create a path to healing.

So, I’ve added in more experiential approaches, such as family systems/ego state therapy (e.g., “parts work”), Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP) and Somatic (body-based) approaches (including EMDR) in order to address your root issues from the “bottom up.” I am certified in EMDR by EMDRIA and have advanced training in specific EMDR protocols and somatic techniques.

Some people come to see me for traditional “talk therapy” and some people come directly seeking trauma-focused interventions or EMDR. Either is fine; we will get where you need to go.

Areas of Clinical Focus

Trauma and PTSD.

I use a variety of trauma-focused techniques to help with a wide range of traumatic experiences: single incident, developmental, relational, and complex. No trauma is too big or too small; it all matters.

Dissociation.

This often goes hand in hand with trauma; it can be our brains’ way of coping with overwhelming experiences. Adaptive at first, it can cause problems if not addressed. I have the experience and training to comprehensively assess and treat dissociative disorders.

Burnout and Vicarious Trauma

I combine my research interests with my experience in trauma to help colleagues forestall and reduce symptoms of burnout and vicarious traumatization.

Anxiety

When worry has gotten in the way of daily life, feeling fully present, and connecting to others, I can help. I use a variety of techniques, including relational therapy and EMDR, to get at the root of the problem and help you find relief.
